The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Orlando Chester Crowther (MCSN: 0-2203), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action 6 June 1918, near Chateau-Thierry, France. First Lieutenant Crowther displayed the highest type of courage and leadership. After all of the men near him had been killed or wounded, he captured one machine-gun and crew unaided, and while attempting to take a second was himself killed.
