The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant James Courtney (MCSN: 74970), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Forty-Third Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Blanc Mont, France, 5 October 1918. Upon learning that a number of soldiers were lying wounded in “No Man’s Land,” Sergeant Courtney immediately volunteered and made trips over an area swept by machine-gun and rifle fire until all the wounded had been carried to shelter.
