The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Gunnery Sergeant Walter Cook (MCSN: 65335), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Forty-Third Company, Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Blanc Mont, France, 6 October 1918. Without regard for his own personal safety, Gunnery Sergeant Cook rescued two men who were buried with dirt by the explosion of a German ammunition dump, and refused to find cover for himself until every man of his command had found a place of safety.
