The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Private Chalmers Clark (MCSN: 94463), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 83d Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 3 – 9, 1918. Displaying remarkable devotion to duty, Private Clark remained on duty as a battalion runner for six days and nights, almost without rest, continually risking his life in crossing fields swept by machine-gun and shell fire on liaison and reconnaissance missions for which he volunteered. Each night Private Clark organized and guided carrying parties, bringing food and water to the men in the front lines.
