The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Corporal Howard James Childs (MCSN: 90024), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 83d Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the Bois-de-Belleau, France, June 6 – 8, 1918. Corporal Childs, with Corporals Joseph A. Dargis and Benjamin Tilghman, and Private Herman L. McLeod, all of the same company, were prominent in the attack on enemy machine-gun positions in the Bois-de-Belleau on June 6 and 8, 1918; were foremost in their company and at all times acquitted themselves with such distinction that they were an example for the remainder of their command.
