The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Elbert Ellsworth Brooks (MCSN: 93552), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Ninth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action at Bouresches, France, 6 June 1918. Private Brooks was conspicuous for heroic action in placing his body in front of his platoon leader while under heavy machine-gun fire, in order that he might dress the officer’s wounds. He was shot twice in the hip while shielding the body of his leader.
