By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Major Edwin H. Brainard (MCSN: 0-103), United States Marine Corps, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Major Brainard distinguished himself by gallantry in action while commanding the 1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. On 3 November 1918, near the town of Nouart, France, during a heavy bombardment of his battalion by enemy artillery, this officer, with great coolness and daring constantly exposed himself to enemy fire while directing the fire of his command. His unfaltering courage greatly strengthened the morale of his command and made more effective the service of his guns.
