The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Edward Bald (MCSN: 150065), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Sixth Machine-Gun Battalion, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near Somme-Py, France, October 2 – 10, 1918. Corporal Bald maneuvered his machine-gun squad independently of the platoon, going forward under intense enemy machine-gun and artillery fire and concentration of gas. On one occasion he led his squad regardless of personal danger, in the rear of the German positions, and laid down a flanking fire against a portion of the enemy line, facilitating its capture, together with a number of the enemy.
