The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Carter Leonard Anderson (MCSN: 99206), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Seventy-Sixth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near St. Etienne, France, 3 October 1918. After his platoon had been halted by enemy machine-gun fire, Private Anderson exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to attack the enemy position. In spite of the enemy fire, he advanced and with his automatic rifle, delivered an effective fire on the enemy. He was later severely wounded while defending his position against an enemy counter-attack.
