Lieutenant Taft distinguished himself while serving as Battalion Telephone Officer with the 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensives. During the German attack of 14 – 15 July 1918, he went out and repaired telephone lines, constantly being broken by shell fire, and by his unceasing efforts kept the battalion lines in, after losing half his telephone detail killed or wounded.
