Lieutenant Colonel Woolnough distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 362d Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Gesnes, France, 26 September to 4 October 1918, in continually exposing himself to enemy fire while in command of the front lines of his regiment.
