A graduate of Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey, Roberts Williams was ordained a Presbyterian minister. He initially enlisted as a private in the U.S. ArmyÕs 17th Engineers, and served ten months at Saint Nazaire, France, before he was commissioned as a U.S. Army Chaplain in May 1918. He served in that capacity during most of the fighting in France in 1918, earning a Silver Star.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) Roberts Williams, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Williams distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Soissons, France, 18 – 23 July 1918, in caring for the wounded under heavy enemy shell fire.
