Alexander Weyand graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1916. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Team in 1920. He retired in 1946 as a U.S. Army Colonel, and in 1974 became Historian for the Football Hall of Fame.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Alexander Mathias Weyand, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 34th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Hill 311, France, 1 November 1918, and by his brilliant leadership of his battalion. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Weyand, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
