Private Watson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 28th Infantry, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the operations connected with the capture and defense of Cantigny, France, 27 to 31 May 1918. Private Watson after having had his leg broken by shell fire lay in the field all day where he fired all of his own ammunition against the enemy, and then secured a French rifle and continued firing V.B. grenades until he was removed from the field.
