While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 22 and 23 July 1918, Lieutenant Wass did at Jaulgonne, France, repeatedly leave his dressing station under a severe artillery fire and render first aid and rescue helpless wounded.
