Private Wash distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Clair Chenes, France, 18 October 1918, while ambushing an enemy sniper and driving away and enemy machine-gun crew.
