Captain Walthall distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Fossoy, France, 14 – 15 July 1918, and by his brilliant leadership.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) Junius L. Walthall, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. Captain Walthall distinguished himself while serving with the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. During the night of 14 – 15 July 1918, near Fossoy, Captain Walthall’s company was being relieved in the front line of the Gland sub-sector by Company F, 7th Infantry Regiment, when the enemy placed a terrific artillery bombardment upon the sector. Captain Walthall, at great risk of his life, when through this bombardment with his orderly to the front line to take charge of the execution of the relief and by his coolness and conspicuous bravery encouraged his men and enabled units of both companies to take up positions, which in the morning resulted in the defeat of the enemy infantry attack. In the performance of this task, Captain Walthall was seriously wounded in both legs.
