Musician Third Class Underhill distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 3d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 – 7 June 1918, in giving first aid and carrying the wounded to a place of safety through heavy shell fire.
