Barrett Tyler was a 1906 graduate of Yale Divinity School, and was ordained an Episcopalian minister. After serving in civilian pastorates for ten years, he was commissioned a U.S. Army Chaplain, serving in France during World War I. Following his war service he pastored churches in Morristown, New Jersey, Brookline Massachusetts, Ethete, Wyoming, and Nantucket, Massachusetts.

No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Barrett Prettyman Tyler, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Tyler distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 325th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Saint Juvin, France, 11 – 21 October 1918, in administering to the wounded and burying the dead under heavy shell fire.
