Thompson, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Thompson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Moulins, France, 15 July 1918, while circulating between his guns during heavy enemy bombardment.

While serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 7 August 1918, near Fismes, France, Lieutenant Thompson did, under heavy machine gun and direct artillery fire, organize a strong point of machine guns, 37-mm. and Infantrymen from soldiers who had become lost from their organizations.
