By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Chaplain’s Corps) William Ernest Sullens, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chaplain Sullens showed exceptional bravery while serving as Chaplain with the 3d Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in assisting litter bearers in carrying the wounded to the 139th Infantry dressing station through heavy shell fire.
