By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant Stanley Smith (ASN: 551689), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Sergeant Smith distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Moulins, France, 15 July 1918, while a member of a patrol which penetrated the enemy’s lines, secured information, and later assisted a distressed flank patrol.

While serving with Company I, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the fighting on the Marne, near Crezancy, France, 17 July 1918, Sergeant Smith showed conspicuous bravery as a member of a patrol which succeeded in crossing the German lines under great difficulties and captured prisoners from which valuable information was derived. Later he returned a second time as a member of the same patrol, and in the face of heavy machine gun fire cleaned out the town of Moulins.
