Smith (SN: 2337518), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Color Sergeant Smith distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action on 24 October 1918, in voluntarily carrying in the wounded during a heavy bombardment.
