By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Holmes S. Smith, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters, 6th Infantry Brigade, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Lieutenant Smith showed extraordinary heroism during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive from 1 to 27 October 1918, particularly on the night of 22 October when he voluntarily led a patrol into the town of Brieulles-sur-Meuse, which was being heavily bombarded, bringing back invaluable information to the Brigade Commander.
