Private Sawyer distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery D, 119th Field Artillery Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Juvigny, France, 1 September 1918, in aiding in the preparation of a meal under constant shell fire.
