First Lieutenant Sanders distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Officer with the Medical Detachment, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Soissons, France, 22 July 1918, in dressing the wounded under intense shell and machine gun fire.
