Private Russell distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Fismes, France, 23 July 1918, in constantly attending to the wounded under terrific shell and machine gun fire.
