While serving with Company I, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Richards displayed extreme heroism in the Bois D’Aigremont, France, 15 July 1918. Under violent shell fire he assisted greatly in reorganizing his platoon and leading his men in an orderly advance.
