While serving with Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 19 July 1918, near Conniges, France, First Sergeant Reding volunteered for a patrol, and repeatedly exposed himself in order to gain information and harass the enemy; and by his skill, coolness and disregard of personal safety contributed materially to the accomplishment of his mission.
