By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant William Fluke Piper (ASN: 543310), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Piper distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Medical Department, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Cierges, France, 2 October 1918, while going to regimental headquarters for medical supplies during artillery bombardment.

While serving with the Medical Detachment, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Piper was killed in action on 2 October 1918, in the Advanced Dressing Station south of Cierges, France, while attending the wounded under exceptionally intense shell fire, with great devotion to duty and total disregard for his own life, and gave unusually valorous service during engagements of the 7th Infantry Regiment.
