Sergeant First Class Pierce distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Field Signal Battalion, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near St. Etienne-aux-Arnes, France, 3 – 9 October 1918, in reorganizing a platoon of infantry and leading them forward in the advance.
