No. 43, W.D., 1918), Chief Mechanic Hans Peterson (ASN: 1551024), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Chief Mechanic Peterson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery E, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Cierges, France, 6 October 1918, while rendering first aid to two wounded comrades under artillery fire.

While serving with Battery E, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Chief Mechanic Peterson showed courage and displayed an unflinching devotion to duty on 17 July 1918, at Les Norvins Ferme, France, when he continued to repair the No. 2 piece of the battery which had been damaged by shell fire, in spite of the heavy shelling at the time, and succeeded in putting the piece once more into action.
