By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Chief Mechanic Hans Peterson (ASN: 1551024), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery E, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Chief Mechanic Peterson showed courage and displayed an unflinching devotion to duty on 17 July 1918, at Les Norvins Ferme, France, when he continued to repair the No. 2 piece of the battery which had been damaged by shell fire, in spite of the heavy shelling at the time, and succeeded in putting the piece once more into action.
