No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Ralph Peifer (ASN: 552547), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Peifer distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Conniges, France, 15 July 1918, while leading patrols in advance of our lines.

While serving with Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, Sergeant Peifer volunteered to go to the Post of Command of Company L, and made the trip through heavy shell fire his helmet being pierced through by shrapnel. On that date by the display of coolness and bravery he stimulated his men to make a stubborn resistance.
