By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant First Class Harry L. Patterson (ASN: 158295) and Sergeant Sullivan, United States Army, are cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded them. While serving with Company C, 6th Engineer Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Patterson and Sergeant Sullivan took charge of an Infantry working party on the morning of 15 July 1918, after their Commander had been killed, and under heavy fire conducted them to a good position without a single casualty. Sergeant First Class Patterson was suffering from gas at the time.
