By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Lionel R. Morton (ASN: 306688), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Battery A, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Sergeant Morton shoed conspicuous devotion to duty as Telephone Sergeant. He kept up communication when the ordinary methods failed, by erecting poles through open fields. He worked continuously on his lines during the terrific bombardment of 14 and 15 July 1918, near Chateau-Thierry, France, with complete disregard for his personal safety and successfully maintained communication under the most difficult conditions.
