By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Sergeant James B. McMahon (ASN: 553908), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company C, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, near Bocage Farm, France, First Sergeant McMahon was caught by the terrific enemy bombardment on the road with a load of ammunition for his company. By a most circuitous route he led his men through the bombardment safely and established a dump at a very convenient location. He then went back and brought up guns to replace those that had been disabled. His work on both sides of the Marine River was always meritorious and always gallantry performed.
