By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Emery J. McKellar (ASN: 552672), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company M, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 9 August 1918, after his company had been weakened physically by being continuously subjected to hostile artillery fire and gas, it being impossible to get cooked rations to the men, Corporal McKellar volunteered to lead a patrol across the Vesle River and took out his patrol and brought them back without loss, successfully completing his mission.
