By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Wagoner John C. McCready (ASN: 540320), United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Supply Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Cierges, France, on 6 October 1918, Wagoner McCready delivered ammunition to his battalion while the road was under terrific shell fire. He remained with his team until directed where to unload, and then supervised and assisted in the work of unloading. When the wheel team was blown to pieces by a direct hit of high explosive shell, he assisted in having two men who had been wounded placed in an ambulance, and then cutting the lead team loose brought them back to safety. He died late of wounds received in action. His coolness and bravery was extraordinary and his example was an inspiration for those with him.
