George McClelland was a Presbyterian minister who served as pastor of the First church, Springfield, Massachusetts. He left his parish to enterer military service in 1917, and was commissioned a U.S. Army chaplain. He earned a Silver Star in France while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, which was brigaded as part of the British Second Army Corps. He served at the front through seven engagements. After the war he continued to serve as chaplain of the 20th Regiment, Massachusetts National Guard, and saw service in connection with the police strike in Boston in the fall of 1919.

Chaplain McClelland distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918, in administering to the wounded under heavy shell fire.
