While serving with Company H, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 16 July 1918, Corporal Manuel led a patrol of three men from Fossoy, France, along the railroad toward Mezy through territory held by the enemy and under fire by friendly artillery. He performed this task with the greatest coolness though in constant peril, making a thorough patrol and rendering most intelligent report of the same.
