Manning (ASN: 1917241), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Manning distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the Sanitary Detachment, 307th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Apremont, France, 30 September – 2 October 1918, in voluntarily remaining on duty continuously for a period of fifty-eight hours under heavy machine gun and artillery fire.
