No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Jules Mangold (ASN: 553259), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Mangold distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 7th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Chateau-Thierry, France, 31 May to 4 June 1918, in carrying messages across shell-swept areas.

While serving with the 7th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, First Sergeant Theodore A. Dell, Corporal Jules Mangold, Sergeant Ezra M. Muse, and First Lieutenant Donald Swain remained on position through an extremely violent bombardment until ordered to withdraw from position after having two men killed and eight wounded. These men showed exceptional devotion to duty in the woods below Les Biez Ferme, France, on 1 July 1918.
