By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Captain (Infantry) William Clarke Luth, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with the 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 4 October 1918, by his courageous conduct and initiative in the use of his guns, Captain Luth contributed to the successful advance of the Infantry from Cierges to Romagne. Operating in open country with no cover he fearlessly faced terrific enemy machine gun fire, directing the fire of his guns which created fire superiority over the enemy thus enabling the infantry to advance. His acts wee an inspiration to the men around him and displayed his utter disregard for personal danger and his dauntless spirit that carried him far beyond the path of duty.
