While serving with Company D, 4th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Mess Sergeant Loesch displayed great coolness and courage on 15 July 1918, at Nesles, where, after his kitchen had been hit by a shell and shells were continually falling close by, he stayed and finished the meal which was in the progress of cooking and later led the details with the food to the platoon dugouts.
