No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Albert Lester (ASN: 550294), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Lester distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Verdun Sector, France, 21 October 1918, and by his brilliant leadership.

While serving with Company D, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Hill 299, Verdun Sector, on 21 October 1918, Sergeant Lester took command of Company D after all the officers were wounded and remained in command of the company for six days while on the front lines, keeping the company from becoming disorganized for that period.
