By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) James R. Kingery, United States Army, is cited (Posthumously) by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant (Infantry) Kingery distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918, in holding an important position under gas and terrific shell fire.

While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, during the bombardment of 15 July 1918, Lieutenant Kingery commanded a platoon near the point where the enemy crossed the Marne near Mezy, France. Although exposed to smoke, gas, and terrific shell fire and surrounded by the enemy, he remained in his position and fought off the enemy for several ours. He was later reported missing and has never been seen since.
