Sergeant King distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 167th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Beuvardes, France, 29 July 1918, in leading his section forward through a wheat field under murderous machine gun fire.
