By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward L. Keen, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Second Lieutenant Keen distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Bois d’Aigremont, France, 15 July 1918, and by his brilliant leadership.

While serving with the 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the thick of the Germ, an bombardment of the Bois d’Aigremont on 15 July 1918, Lieutenant Keen conducted his platoon to its fire position, leading the movement with a skill and courage which enabled him to carry it out with success and to avoid loss to his command. On order, he later withdrew his platoon, again leading it through the barrage to its cover positions. Again in broad daylight, he moved his platoon to its front line position, once more conducting it with marked ability and courage. He was wounded In action on 24 July 1918.
