By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Walter Huffman (ASN: 553706), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company B, 8th Machine Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on the morning of 15 July 1918, Sergeant Huffman was with a section situated to the right and in front of the town of Fossoy, on the Marne. One of his men was severely wounded in the leg. Sergeant Huffman, with remarkable courage in the face of heavy shelling, put the wounded man on his back and carried him five hundred yards to a First Aid Station. Four hundred yards of the way he was exposed to direct enemy machine gun and sniper fire.

Sergeant Huffman distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 8th Machine-Gun Battalion, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Fossoy, France, 18 July 1918, while carrying a wounded man to safety under heavy shell fire.
